Police kiosk at Wilson and Broadway

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

I'd like to see a permanent Chicago Police Department presence constructed at Wilson and Broadway as part of the overhaul of the Wilson red line station. A permanently manned police kiosk or storefront space at this corner would give the police much higher visibility in this neighborhood and completely change the character of this intersection. Other cities have put in manned kiosks in key locations with positive results ...more »

Wilson Crime Problem

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

Its obvious that open drug dealing is occurring all around the Wilson El stop. Why not send about 15 undercover cops into the area several times and bust it up to send a message? Its apparent that whatever is being done is not working.

Outdoor music?

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

What about broadcasting classical music from loudspeakers around our problem areas and business strips.....soft enough to not disturb residents but loud enough to deter loitering and gang activity? This might also encourage new restaurants with outdoor seating.

Here's an interesting article on the subject:

Legalize drugs

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

Legalize drugs. When you criminalize a drug for which there is a large market, it doesn't disappear. The trade is simply transferred from pharmacists and doctors to armed criminal gangs. Alcohol prohibition led to the increase in power and violence of Al Capone, drug prohibition is the same with the gangs of today.

Get adults involved with youth

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

Instead of griping about "those" people I would like to see concerned citizens to get active in knowing what people's lives are really like. Sure, not everyone is a social worker, but if you can throw a frisbee or check out a museum pass from the library and LISTEN to a young person- you might be a decent neighbor and a pretty cool human being.

We Need a Plan

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

We have 5 major problem areas in Uptown: 1. Loitering (how do we stop it) 2. Drug dealing (how do we push it outside the Ward) 3. Gang activity (who are the gang members, how great are their numbers, how do we identify them) 4. Section 8 housing abuses (how do we make sure section 8 homes are not bases and hideouts for gang members) 5. Vacant storefronts and businesses (how do we lure businesses to Uptown) I think most ...more »

Cleaning up the buildings on Magnolia and Malden

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

A set of CHA buildings along Malden and Magnolia seem to be the hub of gang activity in the Sheridan Park area. We should put pressure on the owners of these buildings to clean up their buildings, evict any tenants who are living there off-the-books, put in place armed security, etc. I'm not sure what the best pressure strategy would be, it depends on who the best target is (the owners? the management companies? the ...more »

Let Citizens Monitor Their Own Neighborhood

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

A lot of people seem to be bothered about the Wilson Ave. Red Line stop, but none of the ideas posted here sound any good. What if the community invested in a high quality camera, or set of cameras to cover that area, and then linked those cameras to an internet site that anyone could visit. This would allow citizens to monitor their own neighborhood without fear of retaliation. Put the cameras high enough to be difficult ...more »

Flash Mob Club / Rabble Rousers Club

Stage: Active

Campaign: Community Events

I think we should form an "Uptown Flash Mob Club." Or, a "Rabble-rousers Club." Whenever there's a problem in Uptown, club members would respond by showing up in person, in a group, to see if we can get some action towards solving the problem. Example: Someone gets shot at 4422 N Malden? Club members show up at Jadine Chou's office, asking for removal of the problem tenants. Or at the Voice of the People office. ...more »

Adopt-an-L Stop

Stage: Active

Campaign: Community Events

If the city is not planning to clean up/revamp the Wilson L stop area in the immediate future, perhaps an Adopt-an-L-Stop community clean up day can be set up similar to the Adopt-A-Highway programs with police presence...a sign can be posted that states this area was cleaned up by concerned local citizens....

Random CHA Housing Searches

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

Allow police to do random searches of CHA housing. They accept government (our tax) money to live in uptown then they have to play by our rules. Does this violate some civil rights? Yes, but it’s my civil right to walk down the street and not be threatened....something I can rarely do in Uptown. If there is nothing to hide then CHA residents shouldn't be worried. In addition to drug busts, I believe this would lead ...more »

Ward Zoning and Planning Committee of Residents

Stage: Active

Campaign: Business Development

Zoning and Planning Committee similar to Mary Ann Smith runs. Each block club, street club, condo building, apartment building, etc selects a delegate to represent and vote on their behalf regarding Z&P issues in the ward. All zoning and planning changes must be approved by a majority of the committee before the alderman agrees to support the project. If the committee doesn't support the idea, the alderman vows to ...more »

crime

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

I'd like for the Capalman to stop focusing on just the homeless as the only people committing the crimes in Uptown. Mr. Capalman start focusing on the gangbanges. every day you hear some one got shot and killed. I'd like for the mayor and governor to take some action and get involve. Because they sure are not doing a dam thing about these gangbangers. And the police have to be more on the streets in uptown foot patrol ...more »

Speed bumps

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

I've read that speed bumps on side streets can help deter drive-by shootings and other car crime, by making it harder to make a quick get-away. What about putting in speed bumps along some of the side streets with the biggest crime problems?

Device that emits annoying noise only people 13 - 25 can hear

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

How about a device that emits an annoying audible noise that only people 13 to 25 can hear? These could be placed in some of the hotspots like the Mall at Wilson and Magnolia. It won't stop the violence, but at least it'll disperse them. We could approach some store owners with the idea. It's portable so it can be moved to other hot corners. Let's annoy the crap of them. Something like what was published in this ...more »

Private Security Patrols

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

We should explore the idea of having private security who patrol along the major corridors in the neighborhood (Broadway, Sheridan, Wilson). If we put them on bikes, they could be relatively mobile and able to respond quickly to complaints and problems. In other areas, private security patrols like these have been funded by the local business associations (since their members benefit when the neighborhood becomes more ...more »

Blackwater Style Commandos

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

Perhaps The Alderman should think of using some of the 1 million stipend they get yearly to hire a private security firm to patrol Uptown until the violence subsides. I'm thinking of a firm with Hummers, Assault Rifles, etc., Blackwater style commandos. Seeing that the gang bangers laugh at the police and can't be chased, they might be a little more weary of a commando style approach.

Deportation

Stage: Active

Campaign: Crime

People who consistently break our laws, should be deported to the country of their ancestral origin. If you can't abide by American laws, find another country to muck up with your bullsh*t.

Furthermore, anyone who is living off the government/taxpayers, should be dropped like a hot potato if they, or anyone they invite to their home, is a criminal.
